The biology of four species of aphidophagous syrphids, namely, Paragus serratus (F.), Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer), Ischiodon scutellaris (F.) and Dideopsis aegrota (F.) was studied on guava aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, during 2007-08 and all the four species successfully completed their life cycle on A. gossypii. P. serratus had the shortest life cycle on A. gossypii with a total developmental period of 20.7 ± 1.36 days, followed by E. balteatus (21.5 ± 1.17 days), I. scutellaris (21.8 ± 0.91 days) and D. aegrota (26.3 ± 1.08 days). The total larval period of P. serratus, I. scutellaris, E. balteatus and D. aegrota averaged 9.8 ± 0.82, 10.6 ± 0.43, 10.0 ± 0.56 and 11.2 ± 0.64 days, respectively. The pupal period, fecundity and longevity of the syrphids on A. gossypii were recorded. In order to complete the larval period, each larva of P. serratus, I. scutellaris, E. balteatus and D. aegrota required a total of 333.7 ± 59.12, 380.7 ± 75.85, 410.8 ± 87.60 and 472.5 ± 56.89 numbers of A. gossypii, respectively.Keywords

We hereby describe a novel method of electrophoretic analysis of bacterial cell proteins prestained with a new reactive dye Coomassie Brilliant blue R-250 (CBB). The proposed method was standardised by studying as many as 950 disc electrophoretic separations, 50 variables, 60 isolates of Salmonella typhi and two standard NCTC S. typhi control strains. Under the critical conditions the cell free extract (CFE) of Salmonella and the soluble dye (8.5 mg/1 ml), Tris-glycine buffer (1:10), pH 8.3 was mixed in equal proportions, conjugate warmed at 41°C for 2 hours to ensure a stable covalent binding. 100 microlitre of this conjugated CFE was analysed by Polyacrylamide gel disc electrophoresis (PADGE). The method when compared with the post electrophoretic staining by Amidoblack revealed that the prestained discs were intensely well defined with a transparent gel. The amidoblack stained gel even with prolonged destaining showed a residual dye retention making identification of the faint components difficult. Proteins eluted from CBB-prestained gels retained its immunoreactivity, immunogenecity, purity and conjugates of Salmonella cell protein (mol. Wt. 69000) produced high titre monospecific antisera in immunised rabbit.- Total Factor Productivity and Returns to Investment in Ragi (Finger Millet) Crop Research in Karnataka State, India

Background: Total factor productivity indicates the contribution of non inputs to the growth of agricultural productivity. In this study, estimation of total factor productivity in ragi crop and returns to investment in ragi research in Karnataka is attempted.
Method: For the study, the time series data on cost of cultivation of ragi was collected from farm management reports, published by Directorate of agriculture, Government of Karnataka. The Tornqvist Theil index of TFP is used for measuring TFP growth and regression analysis is employed to identify sources of TFP growth.
Findings: The result indicates that The Total Factor Productivity index of ragi grew at 4.75 per cent per annum. Public research significantly contributed to TFP growth in ragi. The additional investment of one rupee in ragi research generated additional income of Rs. 26.84, indicating substantial rate of returns to investment on research in ragi in Karnataka.
Conclusion/Application: The total factor productivity in ragi crop registered a substantial growth in Karnataka. Hence the Government should allocate substantial funds to public research in ragi for productivity improvement of ragi crop providing food security to masses.

With the increasing use of antibiotics, self medication and easy availability of antibiotics over the counter, the number of potential victims of Antibiotic associated diarrhoeas (AAD), either in its mild form or serious sometimes fatal disorder may be a force to reckon with. Understanding the pathogenesis, high risk factors and means of prevention may help us rto avert or effectively treat this disorder. Antibiotic associated diarrhoea is caused by Clostridium difficile, Clostridium perfringens, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebaiella oxytoca, Candida spp and Salmonella spp. Nearly 25% AAD is caused by Clostridium difficile making it the commonest identified and treatable pathogen. Most mild cases of AAD are due to non-infectious causes which include reduced break down of primary bile acids and, allergic or toxic effects of antibiotic on intesrtinal mucosa and pharmacological effect on gut motility. The antibiotics most frequently associated with C. difficile associated diarrhoea are clindamycin, cephalosporin, ampicillin and amoxycillin. The most sensitive and specific diagnostic tesrt for C. difficile infection is tissue culture assay for cytotoxicity of toxin B. Commercial ELISA kits are available. Most of the times, discontinuation of the inciting antibiotic along with enteric precautions and isolation to prevent its spread, is sufficient. However at times, treatment with antibiotics like metronidazole, vancomycin may be required. Relapses may occur which may require re-therapy with metronidazole/vancomycin, or at times treatment with anion binding resins and probiotics. Probiotics have been shown to have a role in the prevention of AAD {recurrent cases}. In recent years, AAD has been increasing in frequency and severity due to the emergence of virulent strains.Keywords

Adults of Scymnus coccivora Ayyar (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were stored in five different temperature regimes of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 29°C along with 50 per cent honey as adult food, and the percent survival and fecundity at weekly interval were recorded during September - October 2004 in the weather condition of 31.9 ± 2.2°C and 68.8 ± 7.1 per cent relative humidity at Insectary, Department of Agricultural Entomology, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai. The adult survival was 81.7 and 31.7 per cent on 35th and 56th day after storage, respectively when stored at 15°C. Adults of S. cocciwJra drawn from 20°C continued to lay eggs for up to 49 days which were 28.4, 23.4, 18.O, 15.4, 12.7, 7.4 and 4.0 eggs/female on 7, 14, 21, 28,35, 42 and 49th day after storage, respectively. Temperature at 20 and 15°C were favourable for the storage of adults with survival for prolonged period while 5 and 10°C were detrimental to survival and fecundity.Keywords

Distributed flexible AC transmission system (DFACTS) devices offer many potential benefits to power systems. This paper examines the impact of installing D-FACTS devices by studying the sensitivities of power system quantities such as voltage magnitude, voltage angle, bus power injections, line power flows, and real power losses with respect to line impedance. These sensitivities enable us to identify and develop appropriate applications for the use of D-FACTS devices for the enhanced operation and control of the grid. Load balancing algorithm tries to balance the total system load by transparently transferring the workload from heavily loaded nodes to lightly loaded nodes, to ensure good overall performance. In this paper the performance analysis of various load balancing algorithms based on different qualitative parameters, considering static and dynamic load balancing approaches are considered. The analysis indicates that these both types of algorithms can have advancements as well as weaknesses over each other. Decision of type of algorithm to be implemented will be based on type of parallel and distributed applications to solve. The main purpose of this paper is to help in design of new algorithms in future by exhaustive study of behavior and characteristics of various existing algorithms.Keywords

Assessment of clean speech from a noisy speech signal has been a research topic for a long time. This research finds its variety of applications, which includes the present mobile communication also. The most important outcome of this research is the improved quality and reduced listening effort in the presence of an interfering noise signal. In this paper the performance of various noise reduction techniques namely spectral subtraction, wavelet transforms, iterative subtraction, MMSE and Wiener filtering is done. This paper proposes a time-frequency estimator for enhancement of noisy speech signals in the discrete frequency transform domain. In the proposed method the estimation is based on modeling and filtering frequency components of noisy speech signal using Kalman filters. Experimental outcome show that the proposed method provides the better performance as compared to the other Spectral processing approaches.

The paper deals with study of physico-chemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, total hardness, total alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, manganese, ammonia, chloride, sulphate and fluoride of ground waters from seven sampling stations in Kuniamuthur and Madukkarai areas of Coimbatore. Use of resistant sources is one of the important techniques in integrated pest management, because the resistant cultivars are amenable to fit in integrated pest management strategies. Although resistant cultivars were developed and planted over large areas, they cannot maintain the insect population to below the economic threshold level due to various other stresses during the period of cultivation. In the absence of expected level of natural heritable resistance, creation and combination of induced resistance in plants to pests by the nutritional manipulation through organic farming is one of the promising supplements in encountering the pests and to obtain sustainability in rice production. For that a field experiment was conducted during November 2003 - February 2004 in Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai. The resistant sources used were TKM 6, IR 36 along with one check MDU 5. The organic nutrients used were FYM + biofertilizers + lignite fly ash + neem cake. It was found that the variety IR 36 treated with FYM, Azospirillum, phosphobacterium, SSB, lignite flyash and neem cake recorded the lowest population of BPH and WBPH per tiller. However highest grain yield of 5.40 t/ha was recorded in the treatment with the variety IR 36 + NPK as inorganic form.- Design and Development of Reliable Integral Shaft Bearing for Water Pump in Automotive Engine to Reduce Assemble Time and Increase Production

Background/Objectives: The prime objective of this work is modifying of water pump which is used for cooling the engine in automotives. Methods/Statistical Analysis: In the existing pump ball, bearing is used in which the assembly and maintenance is difficult. In order to overcome these problems integral bearing is proposed. So it is planned to modify the existing pump to accommodate integral bearing with the purpose of reduce the assembly time and increase production. Findings: The proposed integral shaft bearing has compact in size which is developed by eminence material and have one or two rows contains with balls as well as one row of roller. It has high reliability through a newly developed water resistant seal. This reliable bearing is three time better durability when comparing with existing ball bearing. It has high load durability, high resistant to heat load and water. Application/Improvements: The bearing with integral shaft has no inner rings, while having the raceway groove directly on the shaft.

Background/Objectives: The objective of our research work is to increase the productivity of the billet sawing machine. Methods/Statistical Analysis: In this research work we suggest some modification to the existing machine by redesigning the some parts of the auto loader, main and shuttle vice. The rod resting area and feeder area of the auto loader has been modified by raising the height of the rod resting area and also designed the feeder to hold two rods vertically. And also the dimensions of the main vice and the shuttle vice have been redesigned to hold the two rods vertically. Findings: The proposed billet sawing machine thus enables to cut two rods at the same time in order to reduce the cutting time and also could be improved 50 to 75 % (approx.) of the productivity in modern manufacturing environment than the existing machine.

This paper presents a methodology for maintenance scheduling (MS) of generators using binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) based probabilistic approach. The objective of this paper is to reduce the loss of load probability (LOLP) for a power system. The capacity outage probability table (COPT) is the initial step in creating maintenance schedule using the probabilistic levelized risk method. This paper proposes BPSO method which is used to construct the COPT. In order to mitigate the effects of probabilistic levelized risk method, BPSO based probabilistic levelized risk method is embarked on a MS problem. In order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, case study results for simple five unit system can accomplish a significant levelization in the reliability indices that make possible to evaluate system generation system adequacy in the MS horizon of the power system. The proposed method shows better performance compared with other optimization methods and conventional method with improved search performance.Keywords

A simple, precise, rapid and accurate reverse phase HPLC method was developed for the estimation of Darunavir in tablet dosage form. A RP Inertsil ODS-3V C-18, 250x4.6 mm, 5m partical size, with mobile phase consisting of 0.02M Dipotassium hydrogen orthophosphate +0.02M Potassium Dihydrogen orthophosphatein in water and Acetonitrile in the ratio of 40:60 v/v was used. The flow rate was 1.0 ml/min and the effluents were monitored at 265 nm. The retention time was 5.859 min. The detector response was linear in the concentration of 80-240μg/ml. The respective linear regression equation being Y= 44076.08X +726603. The limit of detection and limit of quantification was 0.1μg and 0.3μg/ml respectively. The percentage assay of Darunavir was 98.58%. The method was validated by determining its accuracy, precision and system suitability.
The results of the study showed that the proposed RP-HPLC method is simple, rapid, precise and accurate, which is useful for the routine determination of Darunavir in bulk drug and in its pharmaceutical dosage form.

The present study was designed to investigate the modifying effects of Mosinone-A on glycoconjugates (protein bound hexose, hexosamine, total sialic acid and fucose) levels in 7,12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene (DMBA) induced hamster buccal pouch carcinogenesis 0.5% DMBA painting (three times per week) in hamster buccal pouches for 14 weeks resulted in the formation of well developed oral squamous cell carcinoma. We observed 100% tumor formation with marked abnormalities of glycoconjugates status in tumor bearing hamsters as compared to control animals. Oral administration of Mosinone-A at a dose of 2 mg/kg body weight, to DMBA painted hamsters on alternate days for 14 weeks, reduced the tumor formation as well as protected the levels of cell surface glycoconjugates in DMBA painted hamsters. The present study thus suggests that Mosinone-A has potent chemopreventive efficacy as well as protected the abnormalities on cell surface glycoconjugates during DMBA induced hamster buccal pouch carcinogenesis.Keywords

Objectives: The present study was designed to examine the chemopreventive effects of phloretin against 7, 12‑dimethylbenz (a) anthracene (DMBA) induced buccal pouch carcinogenesis in male golden Syrian hamsters in order to discover resources to improve the traditional medicine. Materials and Methods: Hamsters were divided into four groups of 10 animals each. Group I was served as an untreated control. Group II hamsters were painted with 0.5% DMBA in liquid paraffin on the left buccal pouches three times a week for 14 weeks. Group III hamsters were orally administrated with phloretin at a dose of 40 mg/kg body Weight (b.wt) on days alternate to DMBA application. Group IV hamsters were orally administrated with phloretin alone and served as the drug control. The experiment was terminated at the end of fourteenth week. The experimental animal’s tumors were subjected into morphological examination and subsequently screened the pathological changes and estimate the activities of bi‑products of lipid peroxidation, antioxidants enzymes and phase I and II detoxification enzyme status. Results: In DMBA alone treated hamster showed increased levels of lipid peroxidation by products, leads to decreased levels of enzymatic and non‑enzymatic antioxidants status, activities of phase I and II detoxification enzyme status were altered. Normalized the neoplastic changes, decreased the levels of lipid by products, retain the antioxidants and restored the phase I and II enzymes were observed in phloretin administrated animals during DMBA induced oral carcinogenesis. Conclusion: Phloretin has possible chemopreventive role in which modulating the antioxidant and detoxification enzyme status, thereby retarding DMBA induced buccal pouch carcinogenesis.Keywords

Cancer is one of the dangerous diseases faced by humans. Every one out of 100 women is facing breast cancer. So, to overcome this huge ratio many researches are being carried out. Prevention is better than cure; this paper presents one such attempt of detecting breast cancer in the early stages. In proposed method exponential point transform is carried out for image enhancement and in preprocessing stage pectoral mass is removed from the mammogram image. As the next step we apply K-means algorithm and morphological processing to identify the infected region and removal of unwanted region. Finally, Decision Tree Data mining technique is used for classifying features to detect presence of tumor. Hence by this approach we get more accurate results. The experimental results gave an accuracy of 97.03 %.Keywords

A field experiment with two methods and three levels of irrigation using crop factor was carried out on eighteen years old oil palm plantation at ICAR-Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research, Pedavegi to find out their influence on vegetative growth and yield of fresh fruit bunches during the year 2016-2017. The data obtained have indicated non-significant differences for most of the parameters evaluated. However, application of irrigation water through drip method at crop factor 0.8 recorded highest number of leaves produced (25.83), highest number of female inflorescences (7.16), lowest number of male inflorescences (5.12) which contributed to increased production of number of fresh fruit bunches (7.16), total weight of FFBs (148.44 kg/palm/year) thereby FFB yield (21.23 t/ha). Further, the same treatment combination has increased percentage of fruits to the bunch (64.79%).Keywords

Objectives: In this article, we analyze the Expedition for Individuality in Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's ‘Queen of Dreams', Vine of Desire' and ‘Sister of My Heart. '.It also highlights how uniquely she has designed the problems of individuality in most of her novels.
Methods: We analyze her motifs consist of the Indian experience, modern American ladies, migration , background, misconception and also the delights as well as difficulties of staying in a modern globe. In the field of Indian writing in English, women writers have proved their eminence in projecting problems of women. The Indian women diasporic writers are more dominant than the other South Asian Women writers.
Findings: Divakaruni portrays her own experiences and other immigrant Indian ladies in her novels. She is one of the most renowned Diaspora writers in the 20th century. She has recorded the bear roaring of impatience and also often outright cope the diverse immigrant experiences of grown-up ladies.
Applications/Improvement: It is a quest for individuality in the works of Divakaruni which highlight the uniqueness and problems related to her individuality in her selected novels.

Objectives: In this article, we analyze the uncommon talent of the famous and critical writer Salman Rushdie. Whereas, Twentieth Century has produced a number of personalities in the field of Indian writing in novels such as Salman Rushdie, Vikram Seth, Arundhati Roy, Sobha De, Amitabh Ghosh, G.V. Desai, Chitra Banerjee, Diva Karuni, Rohinton Mistry, V.S. Naipaul and host of others. Among them, Salman Rushdie has earned immense reputation both in India and abroad and rank set the top among the living fiction writers of Indian English Literature.
Method: He has dealt with various controversial topics and delicate issues. His style of handling the storyline with the past and the present countries affairs though not appreciated by all indeed got him fame for his artistic style for portraying the characters in the novels.
Findings: Despite all controversies, Rushdie deserves respect as a writer of uncommon talent who dealt many provocative issues in various descriptive methods in his books. He has proved his literary talents in his novels. He has used many narrative styles, which is acclaimed by all the contemporary writers.
Application/Improvements: Salman Rushdie uses the thematic and artistic work always invited new strategy which is usually reflected in its style of recitation. Most of his books express civic and private based events, past mythos and mythologies, sanity and fictional wit and sarcastic parody – within an artistic and semantic frame work which is generally restricted in his works.

The paper presents the design and development of Terrain Mapping Camera-2 (TMC-2) for Chandrayaan- 2 including science objectives; system and sub-system configuration along with the realized performance of the camera; payload characterization; aspects related to data products, etc. TMC-2, onboard Chandrayaan-2 orbiter-craft is a follow-on of the Terrain Mapping Camera (TMC) onboard Chandrayaan- 1. It operates in visible panchromatic band. It comprises three identical electro-optical chains aligned for three views (–25, 0 and +25 degree) along track direction for generation of stereo images. It provides data with 5 m horizontal ground sampling distance to generate digital elevation model. TMC-2 based on the new configuration and sub-system designs has reduction in mass and power by more than 40% compared to TMC, without compromising the performance.Keywords

This paper provides the solution for smart mobility to the people who are unfamiliar with the routes on campus. The proposed automated evehicle contains four wheels - one wheel at the front end and three wheels at the rear end to get a proper balance. It also contains a keyboard Switch with which the user keys their destination point as an input to the system. It is programmed to take the travelers automatically to the destination based on the input provided by the travelers. This is done by automating the main controls like accelerator, brakes and hand bar. Each control is handled by an individual motor. The Servomotor is used to control acceleration whereas the braking and steering of hand bar are controlled by 12V and 24V geared DC motor. Brushless DC motor (BLDC) of rating 48V is used as a main drive. It is responsible for the movement of vehicles. To accomplish zero chance of accident occurrence, ultrasonic sensors are employed. Three numbers of ultrasonic sensors are placed at the front of the vehicle. These sensors help us to detect the obstacle along its way. It gives out a signal when any obstacle is sensed. Global Positioning System (GPS) module helps up to identify the vehicle location on the Earth by coordinates in the form of latitude and longitude. Through this module, the coordinate that the vehicle has to travel is identified and fed into the Arduino microcontroller. At every instance, the present location of the vehicle is compared with the pre-loaded coordinates. Finally, the Arduino microcontroller works with the data from these components and generates the control signals to drive the vehicle in a programmed route. The developed simple Cybernetic E Vehicle is tested in real time.Keywords

In this paper, a method is presented to make our surrounding's and environment to be clean. Recently the Government of India has launched a smart city project and for these smart cities to be smarter, it is necessary that the garbage collection and disposal system has to be smarter than the existing systems. The idea of Self-Monitoring Automated Route Trash (SMART) dustbin is for the smart buildings, Colleges, Hospitals and bus stands, etc. In this paper, we have used the Ultrasonic sensor and PIR sensor to sense the human presence, Servomotor to open the dustbin top, Ultrasonic sensor to sense the garbage level. A communication module is used to communicate signals between two dustbins and GSM module to send the message to operator. As soon as the dustbin is full it moves in the predefined path to reach the unnoticed place with the help of the Line follower robot using Arduino Microcontroller. We have designed a simple model to test the effectiveness of the proposed method. This paper gives an idea to be implemented in Swach Bharat dustbin in a real time model of various loads like full load, half load and empty load and for different weights.Keywords

Laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy some plant products against third instar larvae of Galleria mellonella L. at the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai. Among plant products tested citronella oil 3% led to maximum mortality (76.67%), followed by neem oil 3% (73.33%) while garlic extract 3% gave the least mortality (53.33%) at 14 DAT. The weight reduction of comb ranged from 3.21 to 5.36 g and cell damage ranged from 27.88 to 57.45%, respectively in different treatments.Keywords

This study on pollinator diversity and abundance of frequent floral visitors was conducted during on coriander during rabi 2019-20 in Lalapuram village of Kallikudi block, Madurai district. Coriander flowers were observed to be visited by 25 pollinators. Among the visitors, four species were hymenopterans belonging to Apis (16%) and six from Non- Apis spp. (24%) Four belonged to Lepidoptera and Diptera (16%), three from Hemiptera and Coleoptera (12%) and one from Araneae (4%). Among all these, Apis florea was the most dominant one among Apis spp. followed by Apis cerana indica and Tetragonula iridipennis. The foraging activity and Shannon- Weiner’s diversity index (2.78) was observed to be maximum during 1000- 1200 hrs.Keywords

The contact toxicity of insecticides used in the cashew ecosystem viz., thiamethoxam, carbosulfan, buprofezin, lambdacyhalothrin, imidacloprid, chlorpyriphos and profenophos were evaluated against Indian bee Apis cerana indica F., and stingless bee Tetragonula iridipennis S. under laboratory conditions. It was observed that buprofezin caused the least mortality of 21.48 and 19.91% with A. cerana indica and T. iridipennis, respectively; chlorpyriphos led to maximum mortality of 100% to with both the bees, and thus highly toxic at 24 hours after treatment (HAT). Imidacloprid led to >70% mortality with both the bee species at 24 HAT, while it varied from 40 to 60% the bees with thiamethoxam, carbosulfan and lambda cyhalothrin at 24 HAT.Keywords
